A dear friend of mine, hearing that I needed a front doorway location to shoot one of my films, offered to let me use her home. I was of course deeply grateful. Then when I told her I would be playing the colonel, she said she loved a man in uniform. I’m sure she meant it as a compliment, but it got me to thinking about what uniforms represent. If you wear a military uniform, it means you are exempt from the societal norm that killing another person is wrong. A soldier may even be a Christian, professing to believe “thou shalt not kill,” but at the same time say, “But this is war; it’s different.” The job of the military is to kill, and the uniform is the symbol of that.
